What is the Athena Network?

The Athena Network is a non-profit association formed by mental health professionals who provide psychological and psychosocial help to immigrants who are in high-risk situations.

These professionals exchange their experiences of helping immigrants, conduct research and propose initiatives to improve the protection of the mental health of these people.

Where does the Athena Network come from?

The Athena Network arose from the Congress “Migration, mental health and transculturality in the 21st century” of the World Psychiatric Association held in Barcelona from October 30th to November 1st, 2010.

It emerged as an initiative of the Syndrome Ulysses Program of the University of Barcelona and the School of Public Health of the University of Berkeley in California; institutions with long experience in working to improve the mental health of immigrants.

Why was the Athena Network born?

The Athena Network was born from two observations: on one hand, the growth of increasingly extreme and dangerous situations to which some migrants are subjected; and on the other, the existing deficits in the current aid networks.

Why was the Athena Network born?

The Athena Network was born from two observations: on one hand, the growth of increasingly extreme and dangerous situations to which some migrants are subjected; and on the other, the existing deficits in the current aid networks.

The name Athena evokes the figure of the Greek goddess who protected Ulysses on his long journey, helping him in overcome the adversities and dangers he suffered. Athena is the goddess of knowledge and humanism, values that we consider fundamental.
